The best outcome for a fallen chick is to be reunited with its parents. Hui Manu O Kū keeps records of tern activity and may be able to help get the chick back to its parents. If the bird is injured or orphaned, the Hawai'i Wildlife Center provides rearing and rehabilitation for all native birds and bats.

Manu O Kū or White Tern Rescue Tips
- While waiting for assistance, stay nearby or arrange to have someone stay nearby to keep predators away from the bird. Do not give the bird food or water.
- If you have found a chick and staying nearby is impossible, place the chick as high off the ground as possible, close to the site at which you found it, and make sure the first responder will be able to locate the chick.
- If you find an adult Manu O Kū on the ground, it is likely injured.
- If you find a chick alone in a tree, please don't worry - it's normal! Do not disturb the chick, its parents will return soon.
Please note that in Hawai'i it is against State and Federal laws to keep any wildlife without appropriate permits, even if you plan on releasing them.
